Calais er en Frankrike|fransk havneby ved Den engelske kanal med ca. 80 000 innbyggere. Det er den byen i Frankrike som ligger nærmest England, da avstanden over til Dover er bare 34 km. her. Byen har tidligere tilhørt engelskmennene, da den ble erobret av Kong Edvard III av England i 1347, etter en beleiring som hadde vart i hele 11 måneder. Calais var engelsk helt frem til 1558, da franskmennene erobret byen tilbake.
