Carnac: Guide


Carnac er en by og et område i Bretagne i Frankrike.

Stedet er mest kjent for sine lange rekker av forhistoriske bautasteiner. Anlegget er det største av sitt slag i verden. Det er datert til ca. 4700 f.Kr. og anses som det eldste byggverket i Europa. Det finnes også en rekke forhistoriske gravhauger i området. Steinsettingen består av tusenvis av megalitter som ennå står der, til tross for at den har blitt forsømt og deler har blitt revet ned av lokale bønder. Fire alleer strekker seg nesten 8 kilometer gjennom forskjellig terreng.

Den største konsentrasjonen av steiner ligger ved tettstedet Le Ménec ca. 10 km nord for Carnac, hvor en husklynge er omgitt av en elipseformet krets av steiner som står skulder ved skulder. Denne ringen består av 70 bautaer, med en gjennomsnittshøyde på ca. 1,2 meter, og har et tverrmål på ca. 100 meter. Østover fra steinkretsen ved Le Ménec står 1099 steiner i 11 rekker. Steinene er ordnet etter størrelse, fra 3,7 til 0,9 meter. Rekkene er ikke rette men kurver mot nordøst. De avsluttes i nok en steinkrets ca. 0,8 km unna.

En stein i anlegget, nær Locmariaquer kalles Alvesteinen. Den har opprinnelig vært over 20 meter høy og er regnet som den største megalitten i Europa.
