Bochum: Guide


Bochum er en by i Nordrhein-Westfalen i Tyskland. Den ligger i Ruhr-området mellom de større byene Essen og Dortmund, og har 386 499 innbyggere (2005).

Historie

Byen ble grunnlagt allerede i det 14. århundre, men ble ingen betydningsfull by før på 1800-tallet da kull- og stålindustrien slo seg ned i Ruhr-området. Dette medførte en stor befolkningsvekst i hele området, og bare i Bochum doblet innbyggertallet seg fra 1850 til 1890.

All gruvedriften i byen opphørte mellom 1960 og 1973, og i stedet kom bilindustrien og sørget for at sysselsettingen i byen ble opprettholdt. I 1965 åpnet også Ruhr-Universität Bochum|Ruhr-Universität, det første universitetet i Ruhr-området og det første nye universitetet i Tyskland etter annen verdenskrig. I 1975 ble den tidligere selvstendige byen Wattenscheid slått sammen med Bochum på tross av en folkeavstemning der flertallet gikk mot sammenslåingen.

Fotballaget VfL Bochum hører hjemme i byen. Det rykket i 2005 ned fra Bundesliga til nivå to i tysk fotball. Klubbens erkerivaler er Borussia Dortmund og FC Schalke 04, som begge holder til i nabobyene.

I Bochum har man også to middelalderen|middelalderslott som ligger på nordbredden av elven Ruhr. Andre severdigheter er det tyske bergverksmuseet og jernbanemuseet i Dahlhausen.
