Düsseldorf er hovedstaden i den tyske delstaten Nordrhein-Westfalen
Düsseldorf har nærmere 600 000 innbyggere, og er en velstående by som har bl.a. en stor messe- og utstillingsindustri, foruten å være et av Tysklands viktigste kunstsentre. I byen finnes et berømt operahus, tallrike museer og teatre, musikkskoler og et stort universitet, Heinrich Heine|Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf.
Kunstakademiet
Byen har spilt en viktig rolle i norsk kunsthistorie. Kunstakademiet i Düsseldorf og den såkalte Düsseldorfskolen i perioden 1830-1870 ga avgjørende bidrag til utviklingen av norsk nasjonalromantikk|nasjonalromantisk malerkunst. Flere kunstnere oppholdt seg i byen for kortere eller lengre perioder: Adolph Tidemand, Hans Gude, August Cappelen, Peter Nicolai Arbo, Lars Hertervig, Johan Martin Nielssen.
