Offenbach am Main: Guide
Offenbach am Main er med 119.233 innbyggere (31. mars 2006) en av de større byene i Rhein-Main-området, femte største by og minste storby i delstaten Hessen der den ligger sør for elven Main. Arkeologiske utgravninger har bevist at området har vært bebodd siden Steinalderen|stenalderen. Den nærmeste store byen er den umiddelbart vestlig tilgrensende metropolen Frankfurt am Main, som Offenbach i praksis har vokst sammen med.
Innbyggertallet i Offenbach am Main passerte i 1954 grensen på 100 000, hvoretter den fikk status som storby.
Byen er et viktig industri-, tjeneste- og messested, men har grunnet en negativ utvikling innen industrien fått visse sosiale problem. I byen avholdes årlig en internasjonal messe for lærvarer,
en industri den tidligere var kjent for ved siden av berømmelsen den hadde som messeby, men den er i dag best kjent som Frankfurts industri-forstad. Tysklands meteorologiske tjeneste har sitt sentrum i Offenbach.
Med hensyn til kommunikasjonsmuligheter har Offenbach et godt utgangspunkt der den ligger ved motorveien A3 mellom Frankfurt via Würzburg til Passau ved grensen med Østerrike. Vest for byen ligger A661, som er en forbindelse med A66, A5 og A45 nord og øst for Frankfurt. Videre ligger Flughafen Frankfurt am Main nær Offenbach.
