Weimar: Guide


Weimar er en by i den Tyskland|tyske delstaten Thüringen med 64 000 innbyggere. Her bodde blant andre Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, hvis vennskap med Friedrich von Schiller i perioden 1794 til Schillers død 1805 anses å ha hatt overordentlig stor betydning for den tyske litteratur og kultur. Goethes hus i Weimar er idag et museum. I 1999 var Weimar kulturhovedstad i Europa, samtidig som Goethes 200-årsdag ble feiret med en rekke arrangementer i Tyskland og andre steder.

Weimar har bl.a. et stort bibliotek kalt Herzogin-Anna-Amalia-Bibliothek. Deler av biblioteket ble den 3. september 2004 ødelagt av brann.

Perioden 1919-1933 refereres ofte til som Tysklands historie (1918-1933)|Weimar-republikken, ettersom republikkens konstitusjon ble vedtatt i Weimar, da Berlin var for urolig etter 1918-revolusjonen til at riksdagen ville møtes og drøfte dette der.

Weimar var også senter for Bauhaus-bevegelsen, og byen har en rekke kunstgallerier, museer, det tyske nasjonalteateret og Bauhaus-universitetet. Fra sommeren 1937 til etter annen verdenskrig lå det en konsentrasjonsleir i nærliggende Buchenwald, en skog Goethe hadde likt å besøke, som ble benyttet av nasjonalsosialistene og senere av de sovjetiske okkupantene.
