Wernigerode: Guide
Wernigerode er en by i landkretsen Wernigerode (landkrets)|Wernigerode i den tyske delstaten og tidligere preussiske provinsen Sachsen-Anhalt. Byen har 34 521 innbyggere. Overborgermester er Ludwig Hoffmann (SPD).
Stedet nevnes første gang i 1121 i sammenheng med en greveslekt som levet her. I 1229 fikk Wernigerode byrettigheter.
Etter at grevene av Wernigerode døde ut i mannlig linje i 1429 ble Wernigerode sete for grevene til Stolberg, som gjennom flere hundre år hersket over stedet. Under den tyske bondekrigen i 1525 ble flere klostre i egnen plyndret og delvis ødelagt, særlig klosteret Himmelpforten i dagens bydel Hasserode. Plyndringer og ødeleggelser gjennom brann under tredveårskrigen bragte stor lidelse over befolkningen i området.
Mellom 1807 og 1813 var Wernigerode en del av det napoleonske kongeriket Westfalen, før byen ble innlemmet i den preussiske landkretsen Osterwieck i den preussiske provinsen Sachsen (provins)|Sachsen. Men grev Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode fikk 1825 igjennom at Wernigerode skulle være sete for en egen landkrets innenfor regjeringsdistriktet Magdeburg.
Fra annen del av det 19. århundre opplevet Wernigerode ved siden av økende turisme en sterk industrialisering (maskin-, og verktøy, elektromotorer, farmasøytiske produkter, sjokolade, skrivevarer, byggstoffer), som gjorde byen til et økonomisk senter.
