Napoli: Guide
Napoli (fransk og tidligere fra tysk Neapel) er den største byen i Sør-Italia og hovedstad i regionen Campania. Byen har omtrent 1 million innbyggere. Ikke så langt ifra byen ligger vulkanen Vesuv.
Napoli ble sannsynligvis grunnlagt av Hellas|greske kolonister fra Ischia|Pithekusai (Ischia) rundt 8. århundre f.Kr., og var del av Magna Graecia, skjønt det er også mulig at kolonistene kom fra Cuma. Den lå noen kilometer fra den antikke byen Partenope. Av denne grunnen ble den kalt Neapolis, «den nye byen». Selv om den ble erobret av romerriket|romerne på 300-tallet f.Kr. beholdt den lenge sin greske kultur.
I festningen Castel dell'Ovo ble Romulus Augustulus, den siste antikke romerske keiser, innesperret, etter at han var blitt avsatt i 476 e.Kr. I det 6. århundre ble byen besatt av bysantinerne i et forsøk på å gjenopprette romerriket. Året 1039 falt Napoli i normannernes hender og ble en del av det da normanniske kongeriket Sicilia.
1224 grunnla Fredrik II av Italia|Fredrik II av Hohenstaufen universitetet i Napoli, og 1266 ble byen og kongeriket Sicilia av paven gitt til Karl I av Anjou, som forla sin hovedstad fra Palermo til Napoli.
I 1284 ble kongeriket delt i to deler, som begge gjorde krav på benevnelsen kongeriket Sicilia. De to delene forble adskilt frem til 1816, da de ble samlet under navnet Kongeriket De to Sicilier. I 1860 gikk Kongeriket De to Sicilier under, og byen ble en del av kongeriket Italia.
I Napoli finnes San Carlo, Napoli|San Carlo, det eldste operahuset i verden som fremdeles er i drift. Det ble åpnet 4. november 1737.
Ifølge tradisjonen er Napoli opprinnelsessted for den italienske matretten pizza.
I Napoli ligger det et norsk generalkonsulat.
