Spoleto: Guide

Spoleto er en by i den italia|italienske regionen Umbria men ca 35.000 innbyggere, og ligger i provinsen Perugia.

Historie

Antikkens Spoletium nevnes for første gang i historiske kilder i 241 f.Kr.. Etter slaget ved Trasimenersjøen i 217 f.Kr.) ble Spoletium angrepet av Hannibal, men byen klarte å slå angriperne tilbake, Under den andre punerkrig var byen en forbundsfelle med Roma. Under borgerkrigene var byen også omkjempet.

I Romerriket blomstet byen som handelssted, men fikk ikke noen føresterangs betydning. Den lå ikke ved noen av de store romerveiene, ved en av de romerske sideveier. Byen fikk biskop på 300-tallet.

Under langobardene ble Spoleto hovedstad for et stort og uavhengig hertugdømme i 570. Markgrevinnen Matilda skjenket til slutt hele hertigdømmet til pave Gregor VII.

I 1155 ødela Fredrik Barbarossa byen. I 1213 ble den endelig inntatt og det del av Kirkestaten under pave Gregor IX. På den tid paven residerte i Avignon var den igjen heftig omkjempet, men til slutt klarte kardinal Gil Alvarez de Albornoz i få byen permanent innlemmet i Kirkestaten på nytt i 1354.
