Sapporo by (札幌市; Sapporo-shi) er den femte største byen i Japan, og er hovedstaden i provinsen Hokkaido|Hokkaidō.
Byen har en estimert befolkning på 1 860 892 personer per 1. desember 2003, og en befolkningstetthet på 1 659,85 personer per kvadratkilometer|km². Det totale arealet er 1 121 12 km².
Byen ble grunnlagt den 1. august 1922 og ble regulert som japansk storby fra 1. april, 1972. Den betjenes av Nye Chitose flyplass.
De Vinter-OL_1972|Olympiske vinterleker i 1972 ble holdt i Sapporo. Dette var det første Vinter-OL som ble holdt i Asia, og det ble åpnet den 3. februar. Sapporo er også vertsby for den populære årlige Sapporo Snow Festival hver februar, berømt for sin isskulptur-konkurranse.
I Japan er Sapporo kjent som opphavsbyen til Sapporo beer og miso-smaksatt Sapporo-ramen. Underholdningsdistriktet Susukino er blant de største og mest kjente i Japan.

Navnet Sapporo sies å stamme fra ett av de to Ainu-ordene Sapporo, som betyr "stort, tørt land", og Sari-poro-betsu, med en betydning nærliggende "en elv i en stor, stråfylt slette". Kanji-stavingen 札幌 er et ateji; et ord der kanji-tegnene har blitt valgt for deres fonetiske lesning uten spesielle hensyn til betydning.
