Bath er en by i Somerset, England. Den utgjør kjernen i den enhetlige myndigheten Bath and North East Somerset. Historie
Kildene som ligger i Bath var kjent av keltere|kelterne, og ble av dem viet til gudinnen Sulis (gud|Sulis. Romerne identifiserte henne med Minerva, men fortsatte å bruke det keltiske navnet, slik at byen ble kjent som Aquae Sulis («Sulis' vann»).
I løpet av den romerske perioden ble det stadig reist større og flottere templer og terme (romersk)|badeanlegg i Bath. Mot slutten av det 4. århundre ble det også reist forsvarsmurer rundt byen.
Etter romernes tilbaketrekning fra Britannia forfalt badene, men det finnes bevis for at de var i bruk også i middelalderen. Angelsakserne kalte stedet for Baðum, Baðan eller Baðon, som betyr «ved badene», hvilket har gitt dagens navn. I 577 sto slaget ved Deorham i nærheten. Ceawlin av Wessex slo seg frem til havet og splittet de romano-britiske styrkene, slik at Bath falt i hans hender kort tid etter. Enkelte har fremmet teorien om at slaget ved Mons Badonicus også sto ved Bath, basert på den angelsaksiske navneformen. Det finnes ikke annet som tyder på at dette er korrekt.
I 675 etablerte Osric av Hwicce et kloster i Bath. Offa av Mercia tok byen i 781, på et tidspunkt hvor den ikke bestod av så mye annet enn losteret. Han bygde en ny kirke, viet til apostelen Peter, og gjorde byen til kongelig eiendom. Det romerske rettlinjede gatenettet forsvant, og kong Alfred av England|Alfred den store la den ut på nytt med klosterområdet i det sørøstlige hjørnet.
Kong Wilhelm Rufus hav byen til sin livlege, Jean de Tours, som ble Wells bispedømme|biskop av Wells og Bath Abbey|abbed av Bath i 1088. Han fikk også tillatelse til å flytte bispesetet fra Wells til Bath, og ble dermed første biskop av Bath. Han bygde en større kirke som katedral, og la et bispepalass ved siden av den. Det ble også reist nye bad rundt de tre kildene. Senere biskoper foretrakk å bo i Wells, og bispedømmet fikk dermed to katedralen og ble kjent som Bath og Wells. I 1500 var katedralen i Bath i dårlig stand, og biskop Oliver King bestemte seg for å bygge en ny og noe mindre katedral. Den sto fedig i 1539, bare få år før oppløsningen av klostrene i England.
Henrik VIII av England|Henrik VIII mente at katedralen ikke trengtes, og lit den forfalle. Under Elisabeth I av England|Elisabeth I ble den restaurert som sognekirke i forbindelse med at byen igjen ble tatt i bruk som krusted. Aristokratiet begynte å reise dit, og i 1590 var byen så velstående at den fikk status som Bystatus#Engelsktalende land|city.
I stuarttiden var det mye byggeaktivitet, og i georgiansk tid enda mer. Byen har en rekke eksempler på georgiansk arkitektur, ikke minst Royal Crescent. I det 19. århundre minsket interessen for eksklusive kursteder.
