Bournemouth: Guide
Bournemouth er en kystby i Dorset, på sørkysten av England, ved Poole Bay. Den tilhørte Hampshire inntil 1974. Den gamle grensen mellom Hampshire og Dorset markerer nå grensen mellom Poole og Bournemouth. 1. april 1997 ble byen en enhetlig myndighet.
Bournemouth er et av de mest populære turistmålene på Englands sørkyst. Den har en fin, land sandstrand, gode overnattings- og underholdningstilbud, mildt klima og kort vei til Jurassic Coast, landsbygda i Dorset og Hampshire, samt Devon. Denne delen av kystlinjen har det varmeste og tørreste klimaet i England, og flest solskinnsdager.
Byen har vokst raskt. I 1880 hadde den 17 000 innbyggere, i 1900 60 000 og innen 1990 150 000. Den utgjør også en del av et større urbant område som omdatter Poole og Christchurch.
Tradisjonelt har Bournemouth vært et sted mange pensjonister flytter til på grunn av klimaet, og gjennomsnittalderen har vært høy. Den har i senere år sunket på grunn av de mange studentene ved Bournemouth University.
Bournemouth er vertskap for mange store konferanser, spesielt i Bournemouth International Centre (BIC), som er reist på en klippe med utsikt over byen, havnen og sjøen.
I området rundt byen, særlig mellom Bournemouth og Poole, er det mange små daler gravet ut av gamle elveleier, som gir et attraktivt turlandskap. Inne i byen ligger Bournemouth Central Gardens, en park som strekker seg flere kilometer langs elven Bourne, Dorset|Bourne, gjennom byens sentrum og ned til sjøen.
Sir Merton Russell-Cotes, som var en av dem fremste borgerne i viktoriansk tid, fikk anlagt en strandpromenade som nå strekker seg hele veien mellom Bournemouth og Poole. Hans private samling av engelske malerier og asiatisk porselen er nå utstil i Russel-Cotes Museum.
Royal Bath Hotel, nede ved sjøen rett øst for parken, har i mange år vært byens beste hotell. Blant gjester som har bodd der finner man Oscar Wilde, H.G. Wells, Richard Harris, sir Thomas Beecham, Shirley Bassey, Benjamin Disraeli (som bodde der i tre måneder fordi klimaet var gunstig mens han led av podagra), Edvard VII av Storbritannia|Edvard VII, Edvard VIII av Storbritannia|Edvard VIII, Georg VI av Storbritannia|Georg VI, Wilhelmina av Sverige og Eugenie av Frankrike.
Historie
Bournemouth er en ung by. Ved begynnelsen det 19. århundre eksisterte den knapt; da den pensjonerte offiseren Lewis Tregonwell besøkte stedet i 1810 fant han bare en bro over en liten bekk og et vertshus på det stedet som nå er byens sentrum. Tregonwell kjøpte en stor eiendom og bygde et hjem for seg selv og sin kone; huset er nå Royal Exeter Hotel.
Mot midten av det 19. århundre begynte turismen å gjøre seg gjeldende. De tilreisende var både rike turister som ville ha klimaforandring, og syke som hadde blitt anbefalt frisk sjøluft. I 1860-årene ble Central Gardens anlagt.
Mot slutten av det 19. århundre avtok strømmen av syke som søkte lindring i den friske luften, men samtidig økte den vanlige turismen. Dermed kom en stadig mer intensiv byggeaktivitet, og befolkningstallet økte voldsomt.
