Brighton: Guide
Brighton er en kystby i East Sussex, England. Den danner sammen med Hove, England|Hove et sammenhengende urbant område, som siden 1997 har vært administrert som den enhetlig myndighet i Storbritannia|enhetlige myndigheten Brighton and Hove. I 2000 fikk de i fellesskap status som Bystatus#Engelsktalende land|city.
Historie
Det er funnet spor etter en, etter periodens målestokk, større bosetning fra yngre steinalder|neolittisk tid i byen. En steinsirkel fra perioden var bevart inntil 1820, da en gårdbruker mente det var for mange besøkende og begravde steinene. Arkeologer har påvist flere begravelser fra begerkulturen i området, og det finnes også en rekke graver med rikt gravgods fra bronsealderen.
I franskmennene 1514, under krigen som startet etter Westminstertraktaten (1511). I 1545 søkte innbyggerne kongen om å få en kanon til å forsvare byen. De lagde da et kart som viste franskmennenes angrep i 1511; kartet ligger i Hoves bymuseum.
Helt opp til midten av det 18. århundre var Brighton en liten fiskerlandsby. Men i 1753 publiserte dr. Richard Russell en teori om helsebringende effekter ved sjøbad. Han slo seg ned i Brighton, og dermed trakk rike og syke dit for å nyte de samme effekter som ham. Innen 1780 hadde store hus begynt å springe opp, og Brighton ble en fasjonabel badeby. I 1786 leide prinsen av Wales, den senere Georg IV av Storbritannia|Georg IV, en gård ved Brighton. Han fikk reist den kongelige paviljong, som er et landemerke i byen.
Grand Hotel-attentatet
På morgenen 12. oktober 1984 sprengte Det provisoriske IRA en kraftig bombe på Grand Hotel, hvor ledere i Det konservative parti (Storbritannia)|Det konservative parti deltok på en konferanse. Bomben eksploderte nær daværende statsminister Margaret Thatchers rom, men hun kom uskadd fra attentatet. Fire mennesker omkom, blant annet Sir Anthony Berry. Flere regjeringsmedlemmer ble skadet, blant annet Norman Tebbit, men ingen av ministrene var blant de omkomne. Etter attentatet uttalte PIRA at Thatcher hadde vært heldig denne gangen, men mens hun må være heldig hver gang trengte PIRA bare å være heldig én gang.
