Cheltenham: Guide
Cheltenham (også kjent som Cheltenham Spa) er en by og et distrikt (England)|administrativt distrikt i Gloucestershire, England. Byen har tradisjonelt vært et kursted, og mottoet er Salubrias et Eruditio, «Helse og utdanning».
Den ligger i ytterkanten av Cotswolds, og har siden man fant mineralvannkilder i 1716 vært et kursted og turistmål. Vannet regnes ikke lenger for å være av drikkevannskvalitet, spesielt ikke etter at man i 2004 fant at rørene fra kilden var for dårlige. Byen har på grunn av tilstrømningen av besøkende vært velstående, og er i dag kjent som et handlested, med varehuset Cavendish House som den meste kjente butikken, og som hjem for flere kjente privatskoler: Dean Close, Cheltenham College og Cheltenham Ladies' College. Man finner også den prestisjetunge Pate's Grammar School der.
Internasjonalt er byen mest kjent for hestesport. Cheltenham Racecourse, i forstaden irske hestesportentusiaster å legge feiringen dit, og Cheltenham Festival, som arrangeres samtidig som cupen, preges gjerne av dette. En annen viktig årlig festival er Greenbelt, en kristendom|kristen kunst- og musikkfestival. Det er også mindre festivaler for jazz, litteratur og vitenskap.
Det lokale fotballaget, Cheltenham Town FC, spiller i Football League. I Norge har Cheltenham Town FC en supporterskare i Cheltenham Town Supporterklubb I Norge.
Ved siden av turisme er lett industri, særlig innen matforedling, luftfart og elektronikk, viktig for byens økonomi.
Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), det britiske etterretningstjenestens avdeling for signaletterretning, har sine lokaler i Cheltenham. Bygningen de holder til i er kjent for sine uvanlige «smultringform».
Jernbanestasjonen betjener tog på linjen mellom Bristol og Birmingham, hvilket betyr at man har gode forbindelser til resten av Storbritannia.
