Edinburgh: Guide
Edinburgh (regionen City of Edinburgh. Den ligger ved bredden av Firth of Forth.
Byen har vært Skottlands hovedstad siden 1437, og er nå sete for Skottlands parlament, som ble gjenopprettet i 1999. Både den gamle og den nye byen ble tatt inn på UNESCOs liste over Verdensarven i 1995.
Byens navn
Man mener at byens navn kommer fra middelalder.
Etter å ha blitt tatt av angelsaksere|anglere fra Bernicia ble navnet endret til Edin-burh. Enkelte har hevdet at dette betyr Edwins fort, etter Edwin av Northumbria, men navnet ser ut til å være fra hans tid, og det er større grunn til å tro av det er en forvanskning av det brytoniske navnet.
Byen har også kallenavnet Auld Reekie (Gamle røykfylte). Den neoklassisk arkitektur|neoklassiske arkitekturen og den skotske opplysningstiden i det 18. århundre har gitt den kallenavnet Det nordlige Athen. En forfatter har antydet at Det sydlige Reykjavik hadde vært mer passende.
Det moderne gæliske navnet, Dùn Éideann, har også blitt forvansket som Dunedin, et navn byen til tider har gått under.
Mange skotter bruker kallenavnet Embra, og dikteren Robert Fergusson kalte byen Edina.
Det historiske sentrum er delt i to av Princes Street Gardens. Mot sør domineres bybildet av Edinburgh slott, som står på en vulkansk klippe. Nedenfor slottet ligger gamlebyen, som følger åsryggen. Mot nord ligger den nye byen. Parkanlegget ble påbegynt i 1816 på myrland som tidligere hadde vært en innsjø, Nor'Loch.
Havnen
Edinburghs havn ligger i Leith. Bydelen har en særegen karakter, og det var stor motstand da den ble innlemmet i City of Edinburgh, fordi den da ble knyttet nærmere til storbyen. Den er fortsatt en egen by, men administreres sammen med Edinburgh.
