Great Yarmouth: Guide
Great Yarmouth, lokalt ofte bare kjent som Yarmouth, er en kystby i Norfolk i England. Den ligger ved munningen av elven Yare, omkring 30 km øst for Norwich. Byen er administrasjonssenter for distriktet Great Yarmouth (distrikt)|Great Yarmouth.
Byen har vært en ferieby siden 1760, og den er porten fra Nordsjøen til vannveiene i nasjonalparken The Broads. Den har i flere hundre år vært en viktig havn for sildefiskere, og i nyere tid er den servicehavn for oljerigger.
Historie
Navnet Yarmouth viser til munningen (mouth) av elven Yare; den eldste formen av dette navnet er Yernemuth. Byen ligger like ved stedet hvor angelsaksisk tid, og da Johan borgerne privilegier tilsvarende de Oxford hadde. Disse ble senere forsterket i nye chartere, som bekreftet Great Yarmouths rettigheter i forhold til Little Yarmouth og Gorleston.
En latinskole ble opprettet i 1551. Den hadde tilhold i storhallen til det gamle sykehuset, som hadde blitt grunnlagt under Edvard I av England|Edvard I av Thomas Fastolfe. Den var stengt fra 1757 til 1860, men ble så gjenåpnet. I 1872 flyttet den til nye lokaler.
I mai tudor, georgiansk tid|georgianske og viktoriansk tid|viktorianske bygninger. Innenfor dette kaiområdet ligger et område kjent som The Rows, et labyrintisk sammensurium av små smug. Det var opprinnelig hele 145 smug i det lille området, men noen av disse har forsvunnet som følge av bombingen under andre verdenskrig.
