Newport (city i forbindelse med feiringen av dronning Elisabeth II av Storbritannia|Elisabeth IIs femtiårsjubileum som monark. Elven Usk (elv)|Usk renner ut i Bristolkanalen ved Newport.
Det fulle walisiske navnet er Casnewydd-ar-Wysg, som betyr «det nye slottet ved Usk». Dette viser til et slott som ble bygget der i det 12. århundre, og som nå er bevart som ruin i sentrum. Det ble kjent som det nye slottet på grunn av den mye eldre Romerriket|romerske festningen ved Caerleon.
Fordi byen var en viktig havneby for handelstrafikk fikk den på engelsk navnet Newport i stedet for Newcastle, som man kunne ha forventet. Under gravearbeider i forbindelse med et nytt kultursenter fant man et skip fra det 15. århundre som lå godt bevart i mudderet ved havnen.
Newport er forbundet til resten av Storbritannia med motorveien M4 og hovedjernbanelinjen Great Western.
Historie
I bronsealderen var fiskere bosatt langs elven og ved fjorden den renner ut i. Senere bygde silurer|silurene, en keltere|keltisk stamme, flere borger på åsrygger rundt fjorden. For romerne var stedet en utpost mot de keltiskkontrollerte områdene, og en festning ble anlagt ved Caerleon for å forsvare krysningsstedet i elven.
Normannere|Normannerne ankom i 1090, og begynte å bygge et slott, som ble fullført i 12. århundre. De bygde også en bro over elven nedenfor slottet. Byen vokste opp omkring detete, og i 1385 fikk den et charter fra Hugh, jarl av Stafford.
I 1839 var Newport et sentrum for chartistbevegelsen. John Frost gikk sammen med 3000 opprørere mot Westgate Hotel, hvor man fortsatt kan se kulehull fra opptøyene ved inngangen. John Frostplassen i sentrum er oppkalt etter ham.
