Stratford-upon-Avon: Guide
Stratford-upon-Avon er en by i Warwickshire i England. Den er administrasjonssenter for distriktet Stratford-on-Avon (distrikt)|Stratford-on-Avon. Byen er mest kjent som fødestedet til William Shakespeare.
Stratford ble grunnlagt i angelsaksere|angelsaksisk tid, og ble en markedsby i løpet av middelalderen. Byen ligger ved elven Avon, Warwickshire|Avon, ikke langt fra Birmingham. Den har forbindelse til motorveien M40 (motorvei)|M40, og togforbindelse med Birmingham og London (Marylebone jernbanestasjon|Marylebone).
På grunn av forbindelsen med Shakespeare kommer mange turister til Stratford, omkring 2 millioner hvert år. Dette betyr at turisme er viktigste næringsvei. I tillegg er det endel aluminiumsindustri, og båtbyggerier. Turismen fører med seg noen problemer, og innbyggerne har i senere år klaget på at det er vanskelig å komme fra i byen på grunn av alle turbussene.
Shakespeare-attraksjoner
Ved bredden av Avon står Elisabeth Is tid, og The Other Place. Bygningen Shakespeare ble født i er bevart. To andre bygninger fra samme tid, Hall's Croft og New Place. I førstnevnte bodde Shakespeares datter Susannah en periode, og det sistnevnte står på samme sted som et hus han selv eide.
